Britt Barefoot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Britt Barefoot is an eponymous punter for the University of Southern Mississippi college football team.
In 2006, Barefoot became the team's starting punter as a redshirt sophomore, adding that to his earlier kickoff duties. He averaged 38.6 yards per punt for the Golden Eagles (ironically, the alma mater of Ray Guy, one of the best ever in the National Football League at that position).[1]
Before his high school career, Barefoot starred at West Jones High School in Laurel, Mississippi. He was the county's player of the year and an all-state selection as placekicker in 2003. He also played wide receiver.
Despite the implication inherent in his surname, Barefoot wears shoes while kicking. On a November 2006 telecast of a game between USM and the University of Memphis, ESPN color commentator Trevor Matich wished that he had kicked barefoot. But months later (January 7, 2007), fellow ESPN announcer Gary Thorne said that Barefoot had "one of the great names in college football" as he kicked off to begin the GMAC Bowl, an eventual Golden Eagles win over Ohio University.
