Bronisław Geremek

Professor Bronisław Geremek (born March 6, 1932 in Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish (son of a rabbi) social historian and politician. He was a member of the communist Polish United Workers' Party from 1950 until 1968, but later became an advisor to Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa. After the collapse of communism he served as a deputy in the Polish Parliament and was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 2000.
Professor Geremek has received many prestigious decorations and distinctions, including the French Légion d'Honneur and the German Großes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern and in 1998 the Karlspreis (Charlemagne Award) of the city of Aachen.
On Poland's accession to the European Union he was elected a Member of the European Parliament in 2004 on the Freedom Union (UW) ticket. He was nominated by the ELDR group as their candidate for President of the European Parliament, but his candidacy failed. He is a member of polish Democratic Party - demokraci.pl.
He currently holds the Chair of European Civilisation at the College of Europe, Natolin (Warsaw). He obtained his doctorate from the University of Warsaw in 1960, and is also a graduate of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris, Sorbonne). He has since worked as Director of the Centre for Polish Culture at the Sorbonne and as Director of the Research Department for Medieval History of the Polish Academy of Sciences and has taught at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Sorbonne, and Collège de France.
