Hector "Buddy" Avacena Zabala (born November 13, 1971) was widely known as the bassist of the Filipino Alternative pop/rock band, The Eraserheads, who were famous for kick-starting the alternative rock explosion of the early-1990s.
[edit] The E-Head years (1989-2003)
Zabala, as an Eraserhead, only began writing and singing songs for the band in their 1996 Christmas album, Fruitcake. The album contains "The Fabulous Baker Boy", a song he is mostly known for. He also sang "Fruit Fairy" from that album. Buddy also sang and wrote "Tama Ka" and "Kahit Ano" in the 1999 album, Natin99. He was third, when it came to the most contributions.
Buddy's bass-playing can be clearly heard in the drum & bass opening track of Natin99, "Sinturong Pangkaligtasan". While in the band's first international release, Aloha Milkyway, the songs were prominent and heavy with his bass work.
It is said that Zabala was the one responsible for naming the albums that contained the letter "c" (such as UltraElectroMagneticPop!, Circus, & Cutterpillow). He thought that if it bear the "lucky" letter, the albums might sell well.[citation needed] Surprisingly enough, they turned out to be top hits.
[edit] Post-Eraserheads (2003-present)
Three years after the disolution of the Eraserheads, Buddy Zabala continues to be a prolific musician. He is currently playing bass for The Dawn, Cambio, Twisted Halo and the Sun Valley Crew.
For his bass work for Cambio (Derby Light) and Twisted Halo (In Loving Memory of the Fearless Exploits of the Bolo Brigade), Zabala was awarded the 2004 NU Rock Awards for "Bassist of the Year".
Aside from playing with his bands and doing session work for other bands, he is focusing his energy into helping out the younger generation of Pinoy rock bands by producing their albums.
Some of the albums he has produced are Boldstar's "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Something/What Are You, Really?," Itchyworms' "Little Monsters Under your Bed" (with Romel Sanchez), "In Loving Memory of the Fearless Exploits of the Bolo Brigade" (with Raimund Marasigan and Vin Dancel), 6 Cycle Mind's "Panorama," Moonstar 88's self-titled album, Sandwich's (band) "Five on the Floor," and Imago's "Blush."
He has also worked with former Eraserheads bandmate, Raimund Marasigan, on Itchyworms' "Noon Time Show," Twisted Halo's "Twisted Halo EP", Fatal Posporos' "Paper View," Sugarfree's "Dramachine," Cambio's "Derby Light," and Imago's "Take 2."
Zabala has also scored a number of movies, TV commercials, documentary shorts and stage plays.
