Bundook
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bundook is a word borrowed from the Hindustani, but of Arabic origin, denoting a rifle. The original Arabic word denoted filberts, nuts shaped like the projectiles thrown from stone bows. That usage was eventually transferred to the bows themselves and eventually to firearms. As a slang term for the service issue rifle, bundook was widely adopted by British regular soldiers serving in India or having contact with Indian troops. (Bundookery = riflemanship.)
