Cadillac has used the Brougham name on their largest, most luxurious models since 1916. From the 1950s, the name reappeared as a trim level on other cars, including the Eldorado and Fleetwood. It reappeared as a separate model in 1985 and lasted through 1992.

In 1965, the Brougham name reappeared as an option package on the Fleetwood. The next year, the car became a separate model, splitting the Fleetwood line into the Sixty Special and Fleetwood Brougham. This model lasted through 1976.

The Brougham name had been used as an option package for the Fleetwood during its 1977-1984 generation, but the move of that model to front wheel drive C-body in 1985 left the rear wheel drive Fleetwood Brougham behind as a model in its own right the next year. From 1987 to 1992, the Fleetwood name was used only for the slightly smaller FWD models, and the RWD model was called simply Brougham. The Fleetwood name returned to the RWD model with a major redesign in 1993, and Brougham again was an option package. By its various names during these years, it was the largest Cadillac model.
It used the super-long 121.5 in wheelbase D-body platform, and used 5.0 L Oldsmobile, 5.0 L Chevrolet and 5.7 L Chevrolet V8 engines.
