Calvin Mackie

Calvin Mackie, Ph.D. (born 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an award winning mentor and motivational speaker. He has won numerous awards including:

The 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring^[1]
The 2003 National Title - "One Distinguished Graduate for Louisiana"
The 2002 Black Engineer of the Year Award for College Level Educator^[2]
The 2002 New Orleans Data News Weekly Trailblazer Award
The Pi Tau Sigma/ASME Excellence in Teaching Award in Mechanical Engineering for 2000 and 2002

Most recently, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Dr. Mackie to the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA)^[3], the guiding agency to lead the state's rebuilding efforts following the catastrophic Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As an ambassador of the LRA and a guest of the U.S. Embassy, he traveled to the country of Kuwait and appeared on Good Morning Kuwait and in numerous international Arab newspapers ^[4]. As a resident of pre and post-Katrina New Orleans, Dr. Mackie has also been featured prominently on HBO as a commentator on Spike Lee’s documentary on the Katrina disaster entitled “When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Parts”; and has appeared on other national and local news shows talking about Katrina, including the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer^[5], and the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

In November 1999, Benjamin Hall Thomas and Dr. Mackie received a patent on a device to retrofit luggage stowbins on 737 and 757 Boeing commercial airliners. (see patent summary) ^[6]. Dr. Mackie also authored the following scholarly journals:

Calvin Mackie approached recruiters for the Georgia Institute of Technology while attending a college recruitment fair in his hometown of New Orleans, LA. After inquiry regarding his SAT scores, he was then directed to the recruiters for Morehouse College. Granted conditional admission to Morehouse, Calvin began a remedial reading course during his first semester at the college. Graduating on time, Calvin concurrently earned the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Morehouse College and the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1990 (through a dual-degree program offered between the institutions). Calvin then matriculated at Georgia Tech, completing the Master of Science in 1992 and the Ph.D. in 1996, each in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation Dr. Mackie joined the faculty at Tulane University where he continues to pursue research related to heat transfer, fluid dynamics, energy efficiency and renewable energy.^[12]

In 2002, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. His research and education efforts have resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and external federal, state and private funding. A professional speaker, in 1992 he co-founded Channel ZerO, an educational and motivational consulting company and has presented to numerous civic, educational institutions and Fortune 500 corporations.

In 2004 – 2005, he was a visiting professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Mackie is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi National Honor Societies.
