Calvin Quate

Calvin F. Quate (born 7 December 1923) is one of the inventors of the atomic force microscope. He is a professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.
Quate was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1988 for "the invention and development of the scanning acoustic microscope."
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1944, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1950.
