Camp Bonifas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Camp Bonifas[1] is the US Army post closest to the Korean Demilitarized Zone, or more accurately, closest to the Joint Security Area and Panmunjeom. Camp Bonifas is home to the United Nations Command Special Security Battalion, which pulls guard duty in the DMZ, and also in the JSA. The guards also conduct special tours of the JSA. The camp has a gift shop which sells DMZ and JSA related souvenirs.
The camp was renamed August 18, 1986 from Camp Kitty Hawk, in honor of US Army Captain Arthur Bonifas who was killed by North Korean Soldiers in what has become known as the Axe Murder Incident. Bonifas was posthumously promoted to Major.
