[edit] Overview
Camp Sparky is an organization of ASU students who volunteer with at-risk youth in the greater Phoenix area. Camp Sparky events are all themed in a way to portray higher education as an achievable goal for the disadvantaged youth who participate in the programs.
[edit] Camps
Each semester, Camp Sparky puts on six day camps at area elementary schools. As Arizona students are ranked in the 50th percentile for expenditures per pupil, there have been many efforts recently to ameliorate the situation. To help, Camp Sparky works exclusively with Title I elementary schools in the East Valley.
[edit] Financial support
With no paid staff, Camp Sparky operates on a very small budget. The college students who run Camp Sparky coordinate many fund raising activities each year. The major sources of funding are:
- Private, tax-deductible donations
- Annual fund raising events
- ASASU funding
- SORC funding
- Corporate product donations
- Grants
Primary expenses are day camp costs and insurance (most food and equipment are donated; the counselors are volunteers).
[edit] History
Camp Sparky was founded as an ASU club in 1997 and became operational in 1998. More information can be obtained on the official website.
[edit] Trivia
- Camp Sparky is loosely based on Camp Wildcat of the University of Arizona.
- Students who partook in Camp Sparky as 5th graders are now enrolled at Arizona State University.
