Canford Heath
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canford Heath is an area of heathland at Poole in Dorset, UK that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the Dorset Heathlands Special Protection Area. It is home to the smooth snake, the sand lizard and the Dartford warbler. Canford heath has also given its name to a nearby housing development. Part of Canford Heath was developed into a housing estate around 1983. The area is within a couple of miles of the coast.
Now an established part of Dorset, Canford Heath has grown its own community life with two public houses, a church, two supermarkets, two schools and a range of social activities for young people. On 19 March 2006 a large fire swept across part of the heathland requiring almost 170 firefighters to extinguish.
