[edit] Stephen Leacock
Perhaps the most famous Canadian writer of the early 20th century, his funny short stories, notably those in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, gained world-wide recognition and helped establish a tradition of Canadian humour distinct from that of American or British humour. There is lots of source material that can easily be found: several biographies and two posthumously published autobiographies exist, and chances are at least one or two of these can be found at any library in Canada.
