[edit] The Gang
Johnny: The show’s presenter, Johnny’s sharp wit and quick observational humour has built him a strong following of loyal fans. He often talks of his ‘time’ spent in the SAS, and is an avid supporter of Chelsea football team.
Louise (Lou) Pepper: Johnny's co-host, and travel reader. Has only recently joined 'the gang' after Zoe Hanson left.
Welshie: Real name Justin, Welshie is the show’s sound man and brings a great deal of humour to the show. He is incredibly popular both in the studio and with the listening audience. Welshie also crank-calls members of the bublic in 'Welshie Calling', in which callers can win a variety of Capital sponsored equipment (ie toasters, alarm clocks).
Gareth Roberts: Gareth is the show’s producer. He seems to keep Johnny on a tight leash, for instance ensuring he gets to the news on time.
[[Paddy Beyonce]]: Paddy is the show’s fall guy. His alter ego for a brief period was Paddy the Secret Sporting Squirrel, and he spent the duration of the 2006 World Cup in Germany not doing very much at all.
Hugh Broom: Lives a double life as not only the show’s travel reporter, but also a well respected farmer within the agricultural society. He usually engages in banter with Johnny before his bulletins, reminiscent of Chris Tarrant’s relationship with his travel man Russell Kane.
Rich Steel: Little Rich, as he is referred to as on the show, manages the many callers to the show. Recently, he has often been referred to as "Computer Boy." He is also in charge of dispensing prizes won by listeners, usually from ‘Johnny’s Desk’.
"Claire Miller:" Claire is the new newsreader on the show, having taken over from Gareth - after his promotion to "Senior Producer." She has taken up this role since the start of 2007.
[edit] Regular Features
[edit] Welshie Calling
This feature has a colourful history to say the least. Around the time of the Capital Radio Tune-Up, a new feature called ‘London Calling’ was formed for the Breakfast Show. This involved a caller to the show keeping a foreigner on the phone for thirty seconds while speaking nonsense. This then became a member of the team calling someone and talking nonsense while the caller guessed how long they would stay on the line for. There was a brief period where two callers would guess and the nearest answer would win. Now however, sound man Welsh (hence the new name) makes all the calls while one caller guesses whether the call will last more or less than a given time. Johnny effectively tells the caller which is the correct answer by raising his voice on either “MORE” or “LESS”. If answered correctly the caller receives a 'Plastic, Capital Breakfast Toaster', supposedly made in Belgium and which the gang advise should not be used.
On 17 November 2006, the Welshie Calling feature was pulled midway through its broadcast, this was followed by a few seconds of silence after which Johnny Vaughn appologised and the broadcast went straight to adverts. Later on a formal apology was made for the broadcast and Welshies part of the capitalFM website has been pulled. At this moment in time it is not known what happened, but complaints from the public were made.
[edit] Paper Review
Every morning after the first song of each hour Johnny turns his attention to the morning’s papers. He tells London some of the best ones, adding in his own cutting humour, impressions and ideas as he sees fit.
[edit] Who Are You
Early in the show a caller will be given a secret identity, and then the gang will ask them questions to try and deduce who they ‘are’. If the gang cannot guess correctly, then the caller wins a rather large, rather retro alarm clock and other listeners can text in their answers.
[edit] Guests and Podcast
Johnny has had countless big-name guests on his morning show, including Gordon Ramsay, Pierce Brosnan, George Michael and The Pussycat Dolls. Most of Johnny’s interviews are put on his podcast, which is not only one of the station’s most popular, but also the country’s.
