Capitol Heights, Maryland

Capitol Heights is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,138 at the 2000 census. The community has a station of the Washington Metro subway system. To the west are several miles of low-income, high-crime areas (see Anacostia}. The Washington Redskins football stadium is just to the east of Capitol Heights, near the Capital Beltway (I-95/495) and Hampton Mall shopping center.

Capitol Heights is located at 38°52′55″N, 76°54′52″W (38.881862, -76.914474)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 4,138 people, 1,441 households, and 1,014 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,948.4/km² (5,047.2/mi²). There were 1,603 housing units at an average density of 754.8/km² (1,955.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 4.81% White, 92.85% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.36% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.

There were 1,441 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.2% were married couples living together, 28.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.41.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $46,667, and the median income for a family was $53,826. Males had a median income of $36,950 versus $35,225 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,932. About 9.3% of families and 11.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.

Capitol Heights ACORN, a chapter of Prince George's County ACORN, has won increased community policing, after-school programs, and access to affordable housing in Capitol Heights. The organization has over 150 members.^{[citation needed]}
