- for identification and critical commentary on the film and its contents
- on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use for more information.

[edit] Rationale of fair use for Mariah Carey
The image Image:Carey Walters Sorvino in WiseGirls.jpg is being linked here; though the picture is originally copyright, I (Extraordinary Machine 02:05, 19 November 2005 (UTC)) feel it is covered by fair use because:
- No free or public domain images have been located for this film. While a public domain image has been located for the subject of the article, it does not adequately illustrate major points in the subject's career that are discussed in the article.
- The screenshot does not limit the copyright owners' rights to distribute the film in any way.
- The screenshot is intended to represent the subject in her most well-received acting role. Its inclusion in the article is important because it represents a significant point in the subject's career that is discussed in the article. This film was praised by most critics upon its release, who lauded the subject for her efforts, and the film was responsible for altering the perception of the subject's acting abilities. Additionally, the film was independently produced, and so this image is a suitable image to accompany discussions related to the subject's acting career, as she has appeared in more independent films than mainstream Hollywood films.
- The screenshot is being used for informational purposes only, and its use is not believed to detract from the original film in any way.
