Talk:Cebu City
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't like these arbitrary "Lists of things in Cebu City" that we have scattered all over the article. Lists of hotels, malls, department stores, consulates, colleges, universities... it's unencyclopedic. An encyclopedia article is more than just a bunch of lists of things that exist. I'm going to remove most of these lists and try to convert them to prose. Coffee 02:38, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Cebu City article is biased and mostly an advertisement
It is very obvious that the people editing this article are very biased for the city, always promoting a near-perfect image, always stating big promises and always taking away any form of negativity. I would not be surprised that Cebu City Hall officials are linked with the pro-Cebu City editors. Lines like "Cebu City ranks second to Metro Manila in infrastructure" are very untrue. Even lone cities like Quezon City have better infrastructure than Cebu. These pro-Cebu editors are too damned scared of the truth. whhhhy
Lastly, this very unbalanced article is portrayed more like an ADVERTISEMENT rather than a study article. Unsigned comment by 210.213.142.212
The only reason a near perfect image is because it isn't like Manila were there is trash and rubbish everywhere!! it is near perfect! Cebu city is very very modern it is second to metro manila, FYI Quezon City is in Metro Manila btw if you didn't know, and i would be too surprised if you were a tagalog trying to make the cebuanos trying to sound bad! and i am sure you have tried tpo do the same, thing, tagalogs are all the same thiking that they are better then cebuanos, ilongos, illokanos, etc. you think that your the ONLY filipinos, well with out us (the rest of the NON- TAGALOG filipino population, there wouldn't be a Philippines. I love Cebu! I even want to have a business and settle there. Keep it up Cebuanos! Jbvillarante 10:42, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] This article is mostly Cebu city black propaganda
The criticisms and negative aspects of the article were deleted obviously just to project a perfect and innocent image of Cebu City. The details over the infrastructure are just too misleading as they praise what is available but at the same time turn a blind eye on what is lacking and what is poor. - To all of you who are basically anti-Cebu, it is only in the Philippines where I see fellow Filipinos destroy and bismirch each other. Other countries like Malaysia, Thailand, etc. don't have this kind of attitude no wonder why these countries are so progressive. In fact, different provinces there are proud of what each city their country have. And no wander why the many hate letters and racist remarks against Filipinos abroad. (IMMORTAL SANCTUS, you are just as bad as the people you're criticizing. Can't you see that?)
- Why make a fuss about the Cebu article? Making a big issue out of it only demonstrates insecurity and "something else." I know that all of you are defending your "fellow" cities no wander why all of you are trying to bring down Cebu for all of your vested interests.
- We are supposed to be Filipinos here and we should be working as one. We shouldn't treat each other as if we are different countries.
- Lines like "Cebu City ranks second to Metro Manila in infrastructure" are very untrue. Even lone cities like Quezon City have better infrastructure than Cebu. These pro-Cebu editors are too damned scared of the truth. --> READ THE LINE AGAIN, it's outside METRO MANILA. Quezon City belongs to Metro Manila.Unsigned comment by User:Immortal sanctus
Ok everyone, calm down and assume good faith. We all want a factual and neutral encyclopedia article, not a promotional brochure. I agree that in its current state the article is a bit too "glowing", but in any case we should work to make it better through constructive criticism, not personal attacks. - I liked TheCoffee's June 24 edit, nice cleanup. I certainly dislike propaganda and bias and from the early edits of this article of Cebu City, it's clear that someone connected to city hall or barangays or its city departments is shaping the article like a brochure. In addition I added a few more articles that are not biased in anyway but factual. And I am proud to say that I am the first to add an article about Cebu city hall.......quiet funny that the propaganda-minded editor did not write about the form of government. My city hall article is simple, unbiased and straight to the point.....try expanding it without favoring any politician. May I also suggest a "Cebu City Politics" article? you're pride is hurting this article and its readers. Wikipedia is supposed to be a source for valid, factual and constructive study, not regionalism. Is Wikipedia meant to be a collection of brochures for cities and regions? Certainly not. Look at the Davao City article, it's much more balanced and more honest than Cebu City's article! Another thing, everytime you edit, you always remove news links about incidents (vigilante killings anyone?), real life incidents. What are you so afraid of? To remove them makes you GUILTY of fraud. Look around you, not everyone is anti-Cebu. And lastly, it's so foolish of you to compare Cebu City with Metro Manila (a metropolis of 10 cities). Don't you realize you are better of comparing Metro Cebu with Metro Manila? To my fellow readers here, let's work together and prevent this Cebu city article become just another tourism brochure. Let's keep Cebu City article NEUTRAL, NOT BIASED! Unsigned comment by 210.213.145.238

I have added more articles and pictures for Culture, History, and Cebu City Government.

I.)
The motive for posting this article (italicized below) is questionable thus I am removing it. There's already another paragraph that talks about it in the infrastructure section:
As defenders of the city blasted the survey results as "subjective", members of the public agreed with the results (called them realistic and credible) and even pointed out many of the city's weaknesses and weak points which local officials were not willing to reveal. Cebu city's weak power supply, deteriorating roads, vigilante killings, poor infrastructure, lack of mass transit and a lack of transparency were cited. In addition, Cebu city's leaders were blasted as irresponsible and uncaring to the public's call.
By making a separate article about it with a headlined title again makes it black propaganda. I am not questioning the article per se but rather the motive, even Davao City which figured out in the AIM ranking doesn't have an MRT aside from the fact that there are also deteriorating roads and vigilante killings there.
II.)
I am also removing again the said article, which makes us question the motive for posting such. Again, I am questioning the motive for posting such.
During the SEAG opening ceremonies and certain events, prices of tickets for spectators were slashed heavily, as much as 80%. Also some foreign delegates complained that the host organizer failed to provide pickup at the airport and that they were forced to pay for their own hotel rooms. Despite the rave reviews for the SEA Games opening, Cebu City archbishop Cardinal Vidal expressed that organizers were better off using the P4 million budget on feeding poor and hungry people instead
Unless the vandalizer can create a link especially the one marked in bold, the line will always dwell on speculation and again, black propaganda. Even our government spent lavishly when it hosted the APEC. Even other cities too spent lavishly like Davao during the ATF. There were even problems too.
I hope members of WiKi can understand what I am trying to point out.

[edit] Flash Elorde
The late boxer is a native of Bogo, not Cebu City.

[edit] Other things to do
Department stores and shopping centers are all they have? How’s the nightlife here? How do people party? And is it all going on mainly in the city of Cebu itself or in other parts of the Metro? —Lagalag 18:34, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] City-peddling
Wow! I can't believe you people! I love Cebu and I am not even a Cebuano. I am from Legazpi City. My love for the City even drove me to learn how to speak Cebuano. But I do understand the point between being factual and writing a brochure. But one has to give credit where credit is due. Cebu, whether we like or not, is one of the most functioning cities in the Philippines! I mean, true, there might still be some city officials who borders on the dysfunctional side, but truth of the matter is, Cebu won't be like this if not for them as well, agree?
- Every statement here must be cited. Either via websites, newspapers, books, etc. --Howard the Duck 04:04, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, it's subjective. I've been to Cebu and there's really nothing special. Still, it's better than the Manila article especially when it talks about the economy. Why is commerce talking about nightlife in that article? Here, business is evident. I like it and the plans. By the way, I don't know what's so interesting about the picture of a 6 by 6 lane intersection of two avenues. I mean really nothing special about it. :\
[edit] Humidity
Is the air in Cebu less humid than that in Metro Manila? 210.213.179.156 03:18, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Manny Pacquiao is NOT Cebuano!
In previous edits, the sports section lists boxer Manny Pacquiao as one of Cebu City's famous athletes. This is totally untrue with the facts that Pacquiao was never a native of Cebu City, never a resident and never a Cebu taxpayer or property owner. I suspect that the peope who wrongly edited the article belongs to the same shameless group of Cebu-based Pacquiao fans who pushed one of the city's councilors into proposing an ordinance to declare Pacquiao an "adopted son".
Some fanatics love to steal famous people!
[edit] Oldest city in the Philippines?
Cebu City became a city on February 24, 1937, even Baguio achieved cityhood earlier, on September 1, 1909. Perhaps it should be reworded into like the "first Spanish settlement" or something. --Howard the Duck 07:43, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- And what would be a definition of city? Places like "Tondo" were recorded in documents like the Laguna Copperplate. --Chris S. 07:58, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Spammers and innappropriate material
there was a link in the external links area labeled
CebuListings - Your clean and clutter-free guide to Cebu online classifieds.
It goes to a porn site.
I deleted it.
Also one fact about the city wich fails to be recognized is the fact that Colon Street is undisputed as the oldest street in the Philippines, and that comes from cebu's government website, also you should mention carbon market as it has over 50 years of history in the downtown region and is part of the cities heritage.

[edit] Martial Arts
I was wondering if it would be appropriate to mention the history of Doce Pares, and reference Ciriaco "Cacoy" Cañete, who is originally from Cebu City. Doce Pares shirts from his students often have "Cebu City" on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doce_Pares
