Centrobasket
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Centrobasket is a FIBA sponsored basketball tournament where national teams from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean participate.
Celebration of the tournament is irregular. Initially played each four years, the tournament has, in recent years, been played each three years, and, after the 2003 tournament, another tournament was held in 2004.
Eight teams participate at the tournament, divided into two groups. The first round of the tournament consists of a round-robin, and then, in the second round, teams compete to define their final position at the tournament's standing.
The Panamanian and Puerto Rican National Basketball Teams have been multiple medal winners at this event, both considered the strongest teams in the region, even thoug it has been claimed that the Puerto Rican team almost never sends its best players for this competition.
The 2004 event was held at the Dominican Republic, with the local team beating Puerto Rico, 75 to 74, for the Gold medal, and Panama beating Mexico, 98 to 89, for the Bronze medal.
