[edit] History
FREQ 107 began as a Christian radio station. It flipped, while keeping its conditions regarding "positive message" content, to a modern alternative rock format. The reasons behind the flip seemed to be so the independent station could better compete with other larger stations in Winnipeg, including those owned by Corus, CHUM, Standard and Rogers. While some listeners felt that they would lose out a unique radio station, the strategy appears to have worked as FREQ has been progressively gaining ratings. They have also employed a grassroots "street team" called the 'FREQ Army', whose membership is now in the thousands. However, FREQ 107 is still a comparatively low-rated radio station in the Classic Rock and Top 40 driven Winnipeg market.
During the format change, FREQ 107 had planned to use billboards to create awareness of the station using the phrase What the FREQ?, with the letters in F.R.E.Q. being added gradually over time. However, due to backlash over billboards that initially said What the F---?, FREQ 107 stopped their campaign and billboards directly went to the entire phrase.
