Chango family
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Chango Family is a Montreal, Quebec based band that plays gypsy/reggae/latino/ska/funk music or more often called world music. Chanson francaise meets The Clash, passionate gypsy melodies mixing with Latin fervor.
The band which was formed in 2000 is of variable geometry but most often is made up of 10 musicians. The band songs are written in French, Spanish and English, often in the same song. There also many songs which use African dialects like Wolof as well as some in Arab.
La Chango has played over 500 shows in 6 years. In 2004, their 2nd European tour "Monkeys in Babylon" saw them play over thirty shows, while the 2005 tour to promote their double CD, Babylon Bypass, saw them play over 40 shows over two months in Europe. They won the Choix du Public at the 2004 Montreux Jazz Festival and performed the outdoor spectacle de cloture at the 2005 edition.
The band performs under different configuration, anywhere between 6 to 12 musicians from more acoustic El Trio Chango and La Chango Family Akustik Stylee to a 5 brass, DJ, multi-backup ultra dub band known as Chango Family Soundsystem and a formation which also features circus performers, La Chango Family Circus.
Since 2002, they are associated with a Barcelona based social and artistic cooperative: Radiochango.com. This popular site presents 24hrs internet radio with some of the most popular performers of mestizo (world) music on the planet such as Manu Chao, Fermin Muguruza, Sargento Garcia, Amparanoia, Che Sudaka, La Kinky Beat as well as interviews, articles and promotions of some of the more progressive festivals in Europe such as Esperanzah!
After releasing the self-titled "Chango Family" on the Audiogram record label in 2002, garnering a Top 10 hit in Quebec for the song "Paramatman", the group left the label in 2003 to start their own 'fair trade' label, Zion Zone Recordz and released a double CD titled "Babylon Bypass" in April 2004 consisting of 27 original cuts.
The band is taper friendly.
