Chegg.com is a community-driven trading post aimed at college students. Started at Iowa State University by Josh Carlson in 2001 under the moniker "Cheggpost", it has since expanded its services to college students nationwide.
Students can register to use Chegg.com and are instantly able to post textbooks, clothing, movies, furniture, cars and more for sale. They are also able to buy these kinds of things from other students like themselves. This enables students to get things they want for lower than retail prices, and also helps students make some money selling things they don't need.
In 2007, Chegg.com launched some new features to increase membership and visibility. Their "Hatch of the Day" features items including the iPod, Wii, headphones, computer gear, and other items for up to 50% the retail price. They also run a "Golden Egg Hunt", where users browse through the items to find and win hidden items.
Chegg.com is different from other sites like Amazon.com and eBay in that it is marketed and run by college students. They also have a "borrow" feature, where users can post things like textbooks for someone to borrow over a semester.
Chegg, Inc., as it is now known, was funded in 2006 to the tune of 2.2 million dollars, buying some other similar services in the process. Now, it is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Their mascot, Tito, is a male chicken and is found during campus events.
