Chester Hill, New South Wales

Chester Hill is a residential suburb in the south-west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australiaand is part of the City of Bankstown and Northern Chester Hill is part of Parramatta. The postcode of Chester Hill is 2162 which is shared by the neighbouring suburb of Sefton. In New South Wales state parliament Chester Hill is in the electorates of Bankstown, Fairfield and Auburn while in Federal Parliament Chester Hill is in the electorate of Blaxland. Chester Hill borders Bass Hill to the South, Granville to the North, Sefton to the East, and Villawood to the West.

The Name for chester Hill is an inversion of Hillchester (chester is one of the English forms of the Latin word 'castra', a fortified camp), an English locality. The name was conferred by Mrs H.A. McMillan, who first wished to call the place Hillcrest after an estate near Regents Park,and then Hillchester but neither of these names met with official approval. [1]

Chester Hill like the rest of Bankstown is a very culturally diverse suburb. The largest ethnic groups in Chester Hill are those coming from a Lebanese or Vietnamese background.

Amenities in Chester Hill incude the Chester Hill branch of the Bankstown City Libraries, Chester Hill Railway station on the Inner West Line, Chester Hill Fire Station, Chester Square shopping centre (currently being expanded), Several Doctors Surgery's and several parks including Abbott Park which is home to the Chester Hill Youth Cricket Club, Chester Hill Hornets Junior Rugby League club and the newly founded Jim Beam Cup side the Chester Hill Rhino's.

Chester Square is the main Shopping centre in Chester Hill but shops line most of the main street Waldron Road. Since the opening of the large shopping centre Bass Hill Plaza in the neighbouring suburb of Bass Hill, Chester Hill no longer has as many large shopping outlets but has managed to avoid the same fate as the shopping centres in Villawood, Sefton and Yagoona because it is the only suburb in the area until Regents Park or Bankstown which still has a bank and a post office.
The shops and banks in Chester Hill include four banks, the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac Bank, St. George Bank and the ANZ, a Food for Less supermarket, a Go-Lo, a Pizza Hutt and a Video Ezy

There are three schools in Chester Hill, including Chester Hill High School, Chester Hill North Public School, and Chester Hill Public School.
