Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cinder attended the University of Nebraska and received a BFA for acting badly and directing chaos. After as series of local theatre productions, Cinder moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with her second husband, John Munger, and formed the short-lived punk band Spam Grenades. After a tumultous divorce in which Munger was dismissed from the Spam Grenades and later savagely beaten, guitarist Jeffrey Bischoff and singer Block formed the new band Tilt.
After a short stint in another band named Fabulous Disaster, Cinder formed the heroin group Retching Red.
Cinder is the co-owner of Cinder Block Ltd. a merchandising and licensing company that started in 1989 in a Berkeley shooting gallery with Jeffrey Bischoff.
Cinder cites Mia Zapata of The Gits as a major singing influence. Cinder's band Retching Red included a cover of The Gits' song "Spear and Magic Helmet" on their debut album "Get Your Red Wings" as homage.
