Cleethorpes railway station is a rail terminus serving the town of Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire. The station is operated by TransPennine Express, and is also served by Northern Rail and Central Trains.
[edit] History
Cleethorpes station was opened in 1840 by what later became the Great Central Railway and linked the coastal resort to Doncaster.
In the 1970s, Cleethorpes station had a twice-daily return service to London King's Cross, typically hauled by a Class 55 locomotive.
The 1980s saw services degrade as platforms became unused. As of 2004 only platforms 2 and 3 remain in use. Other platforms at the station are in such a state of neglect that sand has blown from the nearby beach onto the lines and formed drifts.
About half a mile north are the station's disused cleaning facilities, a testament to busier times at Cleethorpes.
