Cleveland Institute of Music
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Located in the University Circle district of Cleveland, Ohio, United States, the Cleveland Institute of Music is one of the nation's premier music conservatories. It is overseen by David Cerone, president, and Catherine Jarjisian, interim dean.
The Institute was founded in 1920, with the composer Ernest Bloch as director. There are now over 400 conservatory students currently enrolled, and 1700 preparatory and continuing education students.
From 1965 to 2006 John Mack was Chairman of Oboe Studies at the Institute. The conservatory faculty includes twenty-five current and 2 retired members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Currently, thirty-five members of the Cleveland Orchestra are alumni of the institute.
The institute is currently undergoing a remodeling, expanding by adding classrooms and a new concert hall. This has been in conjunction with its successful campaign to raise $40 million. Parts of the expansion are scheduled to be finished in the fall of 2006 and the concert hall is to be finished in 2007.
CIM's six-week summer session, Encore School for Strings, is located in Hudson, Ohio.

[edit] The Dark Side of CIM
On Feb. 14, 2007, an article broke in the Cleveland Scene newspaper describing how the music school misshandled a sexual harrassment case brought on by a former student of Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster William Preucil, a faculty member at the school. After the student had been made the object of numerous sexually related advances by Mr. Preucil, the student, went to school administrators to report the problem. According to the article, after reviewing the case the school made an offer to the student. The condition was that she was to keep her silence regarding this matter and CIM would pay for the student to audition at other music schools, and once admitted to a school, pay for the student's tuition for the remainder of her studies.
The student now attends an East Coast conservatory.
When the Cleveland Scene newspaper was writing this story, a reporter from the newspaper left a message on the voicemail of William Preucil, inquiring about the case, Mr. Preucil responded later to the newspaper via e-mail writing: "With respect to your question regarding my work at CIM, I can only presume that the rumors you hear are based on an incident that occurred a few years ago when there was a dispute over the nature of an interaction I had with a student. The issue was fully reviewed by the institution and was resolved to everyone's satisfaction."
