The climate of Oklahoma City is a humid subtropical climate (Koppen climate classification Cfa), near the boundaries of both the semi-arid steppe climate and the humid continental climate zones to the west and north, respectively. The average temperature is about 60°F (16°C), with an average temperature of 37°F (3°C) in January and 81°F (27°C) in July. Each year Oklahoma City receives about 32.03 inches (815 mm) of rain, and 9.0 inches (23 cm) of snow on average. Oklahoma City does experience tornadoes, the main tornado season from late March through August, however tornadoes do occur year-round. Oklahoma City receives more tornadoes than any other city in the United States, including one of the most powerful ever recorded; a mile-wide twister that was rated an F5 on the Fujita Scale which leveled parts of southern Oklahoma City and caused severe damage in the surrounding communities of Moore, Chickasha, and Midwest City as part of the Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak on May 3, 1999.
