Coat of Eyes was one of the first bands that Billy Corgan formed when he started to define his guitar playing and vocal style so prevalent in his music today. They were formed when Corgan met Greg Bates outside the teen nightclub Medusa's in Chicago, Illinois in 1984. They recorded and played music together for two years and ended up with a catalog of around 40 songs. While Corgan and Bates were looking for a drummer and bassist they met some other musicians, Dale Meiners and Ron Roesing. Because of Corgan and Roesing's portwine birthmarks they decided to rename the band The Marked. Trying to find a larger fan base they made the move to St. Petersburg, Florida but due to circumstances at the time, Bates did not accompany them.
