[edit] Origins of Coat of Arms
Current coat of arms of State Union of Serbia and Montenegro is identical to the coat of arms of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the previous state entity both Serbia and Montenegro were part of.
The coat of arms was designed after the break up of former Socialist federative republic of Yugoslavia, to symbolise the new union of just Serbia and Montenegro. Its design thus features the traditional heraldical elements connected historically with both countries.
White double-headed eagle on red shield was a symbol present in Serbian countries since the early medieval times. It is probably borrowed from the Byzantine empire. The four fields on the chest of the eagle bare the symbols of Serbia, cross with firesteels and a golden lion as a symbol of Montenegro.
