Columbia Gorge Community College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Columbia Gorge Community College is located in The Dalles, Oregon, United States on the Columbia River in The Columbia River Gorge. The campus is located next to a city park on a scenic hill overlooking the town, and currently (year 2007) is undergoing renovations to several of the buildings on campus.
CGCC also has an extension building in Hood river county, which was annexed to the college's district in 2001.
The college originally began in 1977 when the initial roots were created as the Wasco Area Education Service District, which not long after was changed to Treaty Oak Education Service District. The original incarnation of the College operated in leased facilities in downtown The Dalles for 16 years.
In 1989 a public vote changed the college's designation from a service district to a community college, then later than name was changed to Columbia Gorge Community College. Then in 1993 a bond election allowed for the purchase and remodeling of the current campus facility, which in prior years had been a hospital.
Today, Columbia Gorge Community College serves students from all over the Mid-Columbia region, in both Oregon and Washington.
