Colin was born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada and lived there until he was 22. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Pure Mathematics and Computer science from Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN).

Colin married Lori Thorne on August 1, 2003 and is currently living in Wellington, New Zealand.
