PKM was founded in 1969, following the departure from the Malta Labour Party of a group of left wing militants. Although the party contested only the national elections in 1987 - obtaining 0.1% of the votes - it has been active in the labour movement for more then three decades.
The present secretary of the party is Victor Degiovanni who took over the post from Anthony Vassallo in 2004.
