Conceptual laughter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The instant messaging term cl (for conceptual laughter) has become broadly accepted. The term allows IM users to distinguish between "lol" laughter (usually in response to another IM user's joke) and laughter which takes place in the mind. "Lol" laughter is audible, made by the mouth or nose (e.g. haha, snicker, guffaw, yuk yuk, har har, heh heh, mwahaha etc...) while conceptual laughter is purely cerebral - the IM recipient of humor finds a given joke funny, but not funny enough to display physical "lol" laughter, and keeps the laughter exclusively in the mind.
