Conover is a city in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,604 at the 2000 census.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 6,604 people, 2,719 households, and 1,846 families residing in the city. The population density was 249.2/km² (645.3/mi²). There were 2,879 housing units at an average density of 108.7/km² (281.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.40% White, 8.43% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.62% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.83% of the population.
There were 2,719 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,583, and the median income for a family was $48,681. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,581 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,985. About 8.1% of families and 12.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.8% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.
