Controlled Atmosphere Killing

Controlled Atmosphere Killing (CAK) is a method for slaughtering animals such as chickens. Oxygen is slowly replaced with argon or nitrogen, causing the animals to lose consciousness painlessly.
Supporters of CAK, including PETA, claim that this is a more humane method of slaughter than current practices employed in many abbatoirs.
PETA is currently urging suppliers of KFC to adopt CAK via a dedicated website.
