[edit] Censorship
Starting in late March 2007, the Coral Springs Charter School has begun to strictly censor computer access. A majority of websites have been blocked without reason or just cause. While some sites that are not appropriate for school have been blocked (pornography, gore) an extremly large number of sites the classroom uses have also been blocked. Many flash sites that offer tutorials and instructions have been blocked for "Games, humor, hobbies". This prevents the students from using the internet as an educational tool. The administration claims it is taking these extreme measures because some students have been using the school computers to download music and other illegal files and has gone as far as to disable all USB ports so flash drives cannot be used. In the 2007/2008 school year, even more sites will be blocked and students will become more restricted. Students can't use half the tools windows offers, and even sites like Microsoft.com and GOOGLE have been blocked.
Many students also report that almost every image has been blocked in their web-browser. GIF, JPG, and PNG images are blocked for the sole reason that they are just that, images. Most students have complained about the censorship, but to no avail.
The school uses two filters:
- FoolProof Filter
- SmartFilter Bess Edition which is responsible for blocking most sites and images
