Talk:Cornelia, Georgia

[edit] Time for changes!
Mayor..... or should I say 'owner' of a great deal of Cornelia, Don Higgins, has ruled the sandbox for too long. Some 24 years that I have heard of. Little city politics? Sure. But with a large ratio of illegal immigrants that the local chicken plant work in. A VERY open 'secret.' But I guess they are so much of the infrastructure now. They buy groceries, some buy cars and Lordy, Lordy do they buy BEER! So I guess it's 'good' for the local, legal businesses. I understand that the INS 'announces' their raids and is very perfunctory about its 'sweeps'. When I called the plant, they were very indignant about any accusation of illegal workers.
The police can't be stirred to enforce the handicapped parking laws. They told me that it was a matter of the spaces being in 'private property.' As a matter of fact, recently a handicapped woman found a non-handicapped truck in a handicapped slot. Turns out that the truck was being driven by 'hizzoner' himself! Surprise, surprise. Of course it made the local paper, The Northeast Georgian. Oh, and of course, the campaign promises. The only one I really remember is the one about the water bill going down. Is that sometime this decade, or after they've gone up for a year or so? Don't get me wrong, I like Cornelia for the most part. But I can give a tour and point out obvious and unobvious flaws in the city. And speculate intelligently about other problems. But it saddens me that, in a town/city of 3,500 plus voters, a turnout of 800 or so is a real record! One would hope that the 'good old boy' mentality would finally go away. Ooops, now it's all the illegals living in the city now and they don't count .... or do they? 67.140.232.160 23:59, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
