Criticism of Linux
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There exist several criticisms of the Linux operating system. In their 2004 Marketing campaign Get the facts, Microsoft alleged that the total cost of ownership of Linux is higher than Windows.
Linux's intellectual property protection has been criticized. Microsoft claims that "Linux and other open-source software vendors provide limited, if any, indemnification coverage."[1]. Linux vendors IBM and Novel are involved in a series of legal disputes with UNIX vendor SCO in what are known as the SCO-Linux controversies over intellectual copyright infringement.
Linux's desktop environment and installation procedure has also been criticized for years as being too complex for neophyte users to grasp. More recently products such as Ubuntu and Knoppix have attempted to bridge this gap, bringing Linux closer in line with commercial operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS X.
