Current Opinion in Pharmacology

Current Opinion in Pharmacology [ISSN 1471-4892] is a review journal launched in 2001 and is one in a series of ten Current Opinion life-sciences journals published by Elsevier. The journal aims to cover all the major recent advances in the study of pharmacology, and to direct readers to the most important original research. Each issue, published every two months, contains one or two themed ‘sections’ edited by world-leading scientists who specialise in the field and invite authors to contribute timely, authoritative reviews aimed at experts and non-specialists.

The journal issues:

February • Neurosciences • Covering the pharmacology of drugs acting on the CNS and peripheral nervous systems and the treatment of nervous system disorders, including psychiatric ailments, neurodegenerative disorders, epilepsy and pain. This section includes anaesthetics, alcohol and drug misuse and addiction, and behavioural pharmacology.

April • Cardiovascular and renal • Includes pathogenic processes, drug actions and mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cardiac, vascular, renal and cerebrovascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease and stroke.

June • Respiratory • Covering all aspects of pulmonary pharmacology and the use of therapeutic agents in diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, pulmonary circulation, ARDS and COPD • Musculoskeletal • Covering the study of drug action in pathological states affecting joints, muscles, bones, and skin. Disease areas include osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases, heritable disorders of bone and cartilage, inherited and inflammatory muscle diseases and dermatological disorders.

August • Cancer • Covering applications of pharmacology in tumor cell biology, morphology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Includes biochemical and molecular pharmacology, and immunopharmacology in anticancer drug discovery, together with chemotherapy and novel therapeutic approaches to treatment of malignancy • Immunomodulation • Covering the pharmacology of immune-mediated diseases and immunomodulatory agents.

October • Anti-infectives • Covering the pharmacology of antimicrobial and antiviral agents, including vaccines • New technologies • Addresses the applications of pharmacology in new technologies and vice versa. Includes advanced drug discovery technologies (e.g. biochip technologies, high-throughput screening and proteomics) and advanced therapeutic and diagnostic technologies such as gene therapy, pharmacogenetic profiling and advanced delivery systems).

December • Gastrointestinal • Covers pharmacology related to disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and gall bladder, including coeliac disease, cirrhosis, colorectal cancer, reflux and acid-related disorders, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and the role of nutrition and toxic substances as cause of diseases in the gastrointestinal tract • Endocrine and metabolic diseases • Covering all aspects of pharmacology as it relates to the endocrine system, growth, reproduction and metabolism. The section addresses pathophysiology and therapeutic approaches in diseases such as acromegaly, adrenal gland diseases, obesity, pituitary diseases and thyroid diseases.
