[edit] About My Bad Self: (if you care)
Hello, my name is Jay, and I live near Cleveland, Ohio in the USA.
You can usually find me listed on the List of Wikipedians by number of edits. I've made it to the top 1000 a few times now.
I'm a graphic designer by trade... You know those crazy car ads you see in the newspaper and throw away with headlines like "GREAT DEALS NOW!!!" or whatever... well someone out there took the time to make that and placed in all those attention grabbing words and fit in those little pictures of cars and trucks...
Yeah, I'm one of those people! That's what I do... ads for dealerships all over the country. It's boring, it sucks, and if I have to do one more ad I'll scream. So, I'd appreciate if you'd stop and actually look at some of those ads - not because you want a new car - but to appreciate what I and others like me went to four years of art school for.
In my spare time, when I actually get it, I enjoy chess, role-playing games, drawing, watching anime and sci-fi movies, and I waste a lot of time on the internet. I guess you could call me a text book "geek".
I speak English. I know some Japanese, enough to help make some simple translations.
[edit] Current Things I'm Working On:
- Cleaning up mainly Star Trek pages and other nerdy articles.
- Repairing vandalism where I find it.
- Adding new articles that I'm surprised aren't here yet.
- Whatever else catches my fancy.

[edit] Personal Incidents
I been here since April 2004 and since then I've contributed to Wikipedia as much as I can and as best I can, however, there have been a few bumps in the road for me, and I decided to make a report of some of the problems (my fault or otherwise) that I've come across and how I dealt with them.
Note: These aren't attacks against anyone - I'm just stating my side of the story...
[edit] Bashing Cburnett
When I first came here I decided to renovate and expand upon the episode articles for Star Trek, starting with Star Trek: The Original Series I made a synopsis page for every episode. I then moved on to Star Trek: The Next Generation which is still a work in progress. Anyway, by the time I finished up the TOS series I ran into Cburnett in February 2005, who apparently decided to help out with the Trek page face lift I was conducting. I didn't like his changes and we had numerous arguments over screen shots and wordings and I finally exploded on him and I quit editing the Trek pages because we simply couldn't agree on anything. I said some nasty things without thinking of the consequences but in the end I realized I was being selfish and childish over the matter. I tried to control it too much because I didn't trust anyone else editing the pages as well as I thought I could. Cburnett no longer harbors bad feelings about me and let the matter slide, I can only say I'm sorry I was out of line and I felt stupid fighting over Star Trek - I can't believe I'm that much of a geek. Anyway, I've moved on and learned to have some better faith in people since then. If I see a major change I don't care for I make attempts to discuss the matter, but if the other party is adamant of the change - I give in now and let them have it, simply because it's not worth arguing about.
[edit] Strange Picture People
In August 2005 I was happy that the Trek articles were looking good, then someone came along and flooded a few articles with random screenshots from the show. They were oversized, out of place and looked like garbage (especially to a graphic designer like me) and it drove me nuts. I deleted them and then got a bunch of crazy shouting messages from Cathytreks a woman nearly in tears because I was picking on her and destroying her life. She added her father was a producer or some big shot on the original Trek series and she had every right to do what she wanted to the articles. I told her I really didn't care who she was related to and that changes nothing - but I tried to be constructive and help her out so we could come to a mutual agreement about the articles since she was becoming so emotional. In the end she was happy - but someone needs to take a chill pill.
My next picture problem began around October 2005 with Rustyblue, who had plastered images of Yeoman Janice Rand on a bunch of the TOS articles. Rand was pretty hot I must say but these images of her were very tacky and tastelessly added as oversized gaudy images that took up the whole article, and I told Rusty nicely at first to keep his "Yeoman Rand obsession to himself". Rusty on the other hand never tried to retort in any manner - instead in July 2006 the images mysteriously returned added again by Rusty. I then resorted to telling him I'd report him to an admin and he could be banned - still he never replied and simply stopped posting. It seemed the fiasco ended but then in September 2006 someone returned again to post new Rand images everywhere. This time under the alias Hgordon22. I told Mr. Gordon not to do that, had an admin who agreed the images were not proper for this place remove them, and again there was no follow up replies by Gordon to retort. It makes me wonder if Hgordon was a sockpuppet of Rustyblue. Will he strike again? Strange person indeed...
[edit] My 12 minute ban
Back in August 2006, I was getting a little tried of Trek I moved on to editing articles on the Battlestar Galactica series. I created a bunch of individual character articles and it seemed everyone was hip to it. That is until one day I find a bunch of Cylon character articles deleted and redirected to the generic Cylon article which didn't include any details on the characters at all. I protested the action by removing the redirect and trying to contact the person who redirected them, Philwelch, an admin who instead of hearing me out or taking a consensus on the move simply wielded his mighty admin authority and said if I changed it again I would be banned. I again protested the move and get second opinion, and I was backed by at least two other users, but instead of hearing us out Phil flexed his might admin muscle and gave us all 24 hour bans! Being banned sucks because we can only leave messages on our talk pages. I was unable to lodge a complain so I had a friend do it for me. Phil took the matter as a personal attack and threatened more mass bans - a great way to get your way around here apparently - ban everyone who has a problem with you! Anyway, our treatment was seen as unfair and we were unbanned a few minutes later. Meanwhile, Phil cried because he wasn't getting his way and left Wikipedia in disgrace removing everything on his user page. Actually, I felt bad that he decided to do that, but whatever, it was his choice and he was acting childish about it.
[edit] Accusations and mistaken intentions
My most recent conflict is with Morwen, another admin who accused me of plagiarism because I used heavily paraphrased wording from the book Star Trek Star Charts to add content to the Star Trek planet classifications article. In her view it was still word-for-word. Instead of telling me about the copyright problem she purged most of the page resulting once again in me getting pissed at seeing my work trashed without letting me know there was a problem. I reverted the edit and protested the action. I then get a "how dare I" revert my edit message, and I took offense once again. Morwen then says she simply wants to see a proper reference to the book, which I thought was indicated there already, but since it wasn't I was now being called a liar. Anyway, when I get attitude I give attitude back resulting in once again having more "admin muscle-flexing intimidation tactics" brought upon me. I fixed the article - making it as generic as possible. This seems to be fixed now, but who knows.
Next, I get a snippy message once again by Morwen because I misread a statement she made on the List of Star Trek planets talk page. It sounded like she didn't want any remotely non-canon material on the list so I said on her talk page, being sarcastic, that she's seems to be one of those die-hard "if it wasn't mentioned on screen then it doesn't belong here" kind of editor to which she took strong offense. I was apparently calling her a Wikinazi. Quaintly enough, I'm now quoted on her user page because of this. I admitted that I might have misread her since she claims to be a supporter of non-canon material as long as it's properly referenced - well if she had said that to begin with, I would have figured it out - sorry I'm so damn stupid. Well Morwen, thanks for making the matter clear now, but you still have an attitude problem that I believe to be unfitting of an admin. Just my opinion though since I'm just a peon Wikipedian with no administrative power tools.
