Southpaw Grammar track listing | ||
|
"Dagenham Dave" was a single by Morrissey released in August 1995 prior to the release of the Southpaw Grammar. It was Morrissey's first release on the RCA he had signed to after leaving EMI. This was the second Morrissey solo single not to feature the singer on the cover, instead English football coach and former player Terry Venables was shown cheekily sticking out his tongue. Venables had been born in Dagenham.
The single reached number 26 in the UK singles chart showing that Morrissey had enough of a hardcore following to be almost assured top thirty hits but that his recent work was failing to reach a mass audience.

[edit] Reviews
The NME gave their usual negative review, saying that this single showed that "Morrissey has become the embarrassing incontinent grandfather of Britpop". The song was described as "piss-poor old crap" and a "tune-impaired three-minute drone".[1]
