Daily Nebraskan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Daily Nebraskan, established in 1901, is the student newspaper of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Although many journalism students work there, the Daily Nebraskan is independent of the university's College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The paper is published every school day during the fall and spring semesters and weekly during summer sessions. The DN has the fifth-largest circulation of all newspapers in the state of Nebraska.
The newspaper covers campus and Lincoln-area news, along with arts, entertainment and sports. There is also an opinion page featuring student columnists.
The paper, once referred to as "The Rag," and sometimes referred to as "Big Wet Hands" is now known as "The DN" to UNL students.
[edit] Controversy
In October of 2006, opinion cartoonist Brent Meier drew a cartoon depicting the football coach of Kansas being fat and wanting to eat an injured player. The cartoon also had the Nebraska fans doing the wave while the player was hurt.
The Omaha TV station KETV ran a story on the 10 o'clock news the night the cartoon ran. Meier said on the program his cartoon was meant to start discussion about the fan's behavior, but the segment dealt more with making fun of an injured player and the weight problem of the Kansas coach.
The Daily Nebraskan ran almost a full page of letters to the editor from incensed Kansas fans and Nebraska alumni.
