Dance-pop

Dance-pop is a style of dance music that grew out of disco-influenced beginning in the early '80s. Complete with pounding, dance club upbeats, the songs of this music are more fully-formed and influenced by pop song structure than other genres of electronic dance music. It's a producer's medium first and foremost, since he or she writes the music and builds the tracks, then chooses the right vocalist to sing the song. There have been a few exceptions naturally, since several dance-pop artists such as Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue, and Madonna took control of the direction and sound of their records. But even when singers like those become popular, the artistic vision is sometimes still the producer's. Dance-pop is music that's about image more importantly than it is about substance. In other words, the lyrics don't matter as much as the rhythms. However this fact does not hold true to all dance oriented-pop artists such as Ultra Nate, Kristine W, Crystal Waters, Kim English, Byron Stingily and Inner City among others whose lyrics are often thought provoking and/or serious.
The term is also closely related to the Teen pop and Eurodance movements in the mid/late '90s (prominently Robyn, *NSYNC, The Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls), with the rise of boy bands, girl groups, and the reintroduction of the vocoder with the Cher hit "Believe."
