Dancing with the Stars is a New Zealand television series based on the British series Strictly Come Dancing. The show introduces 8 local "celebrities" paired with professional ballroom dancers who each week compete against each other in a competition to impress a panel of judges and the viewing public in order to survive potential elimination. Through a telephone poll, viewers vote who should stay and who should go, and go towards 50% of the following votes, taking into account an average score as given by the panel of judges. Proceeds from the voting will go to the celebrity contestant's charity of choice. Dancing with the Stars has been popular with the New Zealand public, averaging 730,000 people per episode in season 1, and up to a million tuned in to the final episode of season 1 [1]. It was also the highest rated in its timeslot in 2005.
