[edit] Plot
After a clever escape plan fails the Escape committee led by Richard Todd suspect that there is an informer amongst there ranks, the finger of blame initially points at a captured Greek officer but when the prisoners find him dead in there tunnel, all thoughts of an informer die down. To explain his death to the Italians the Escape committee place the Greek Officers body in an abandoned tunnel within the camp and inform the Italians he was killed by a roof fall. The Sadistic Captain Benucci (played by Peter Arne) charges one of the POWs (played by Donald Houston) with the murder of the Greek officer, the escape committee knowing that this is not true, form a plan to get Donald Houston and two other Officers out of the camp before he can be shot. The plan entails the three British Officers (Donald Houston,Peter Jones & Ian Lander )scaling the Camp fence with a ladder constructed from two Rugby posts , the plan fails with Captain Benucci waiting and then shooting the three of them at the exact spot where they have scaled the fence.
The race is then on to find the informer and for the rest of the camp to escape enmasse before the camp is handed over to the Germans as part of the Italian Armistice. The escape plan devised by SBO Bernard Lee is for the prisoners to make there escape during the day, under cover of a production of Hamlet in the Theatre hut by a group of POWs led by Dennis Price.
