Blocking is the means by which a Wikipedia administrator prevents a user account or IP address/range from editing Wikipedia. Blocks are preventive rather than punitive measures used to prevent damage to Wikipedia by dealing with vandalism and enforcing bans and other Wikipedia policies. Block duration may vary, but normally lasts 24 hours unless specified otherwise, and in most instances a block can be lifted if the editor agrees to stop the damaging behavior.
