[edit] Plot synopsis
While going through the newspaper, Dean Winchester comes across a mysterious drowning victim in Wisconsin named Sophie Carlton. Upon further research, where Sam and Dean introduce themselves as Agents Ford and Hamill (a reference to Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill from Star Wars), they soon discover more people who have drowned in the same lake, but their bodies were never found. The brothers come to believe the lake is haunted by a spirit when Sophie's brother, Will Carlton, and father, Bill Carlton, are killed. When the boys show up in town they befriend a very shy young boy named Lucas (a reference to George Lucas), whose father has drowned, and his mother, Andrea. Andrea is the daughter of the local Sheriff Devins, and Lucas only communicates through drawings.
Andrea is attacked and nearly killed by the ghost while taking a bath, but the Winchesters manage to save her. The ghost is connected to Lucas, who leads Sam and Dean to a buried bicycle that belonged to a young boy named Peter Sweeney. Sheriff Devins confronts them about the bicycle, revealing he knew where it was buried. Sam and Dean must find the bones of Peter Sweeney, salt them, and burn them. However, the audience learns that as children Sheriff Devins and Bill Carlton bullied Peter Sweeney. One day, they went too far and accidentally drowned the boy. They covered up his death, and in revenge the ghost began taking the lives of those they loved. They left the body in the water so there is no way Sam and Dean can salt and burn the bones since they were probably at the bottom of the lake.
At the end of the episode, the ghost almost takes the life of Lucas. Sheriff Devins wades into the lake, asking the ghost to take his life instead. The ghost does, and Lucas survives. With his revenge fufilled, the spirit can finally rest in peace. Afterward, Lucas speaks for the first time since his father's death.
