Dearne FM is an Independent Local Radio station which broadcasts to the Barnsley area. The station is owned by the Lincs FM Group (based in Lincoln), whose stations take more of an interest in their local areas than other larger radio companies, and offer a wider type of music. Five other companies had competed for Barnsley's FM radio licence. The station can be heard on 102FM (Ardsley) in Barnsley and the Dearne Valley, and on 97.1FM for Penistone
The station follows the progress of Barnsley F.C. football team. Many of the presenters are in their 20s, and Matt Jones is a graduate of Leeds University and James Stanley is a current Uni student who presents on the station. The Ardsley transmitter also broadcasts Hallam FM on 102.9FM. There is a two hour long country music show on Sundays at 7pm.
A new station for Rotherham - Rother FM, owned by Lincs FM Group, started in October 2006 on 96.1FM.
