Defenestrator
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Defenestrator, started in August of 1997, is a West Philadelphia-based, radical newspaper. Covering local, national and international news, the paper also acts as a journal of theory and practice. Typical of most collectively run organizations, the Defenestrator does not have paid staff or writers and relies on contributions from collective members, local activists as well as from local and global indymedia projects.

[edit] Ideology
Self-referred to as "a journal of hope and refusal," The Defenestrator does not adhere to a strictly defined ideology, but generally derives its ideas from an anarchist or autonomist tradition, which proposes a revolutionary transformation of society, the abolition of property and all hierarchies and coercive power. In short, "a world without cops or bosses," as the Defenestrator's website reads.
[edit] Prisons
With a heavy focus on the prison industrial complex, the Defenestrator features articles written by prisoners, including a continuing column by Robert X. Holbrook, a political prisoner held captive in SCI Greene, in Pennsylvania. The paper frequently features updates on the ongoing struggle to free Mumia Abu Jamal. Roughly one third of the paper's distribution is to prisoners across the country.
[edit] Similar Website Controversy
In April of 2006, a collective member discovered that a website with a similar address, www.defenestrator.com, was receiving email intended for www.defenestrator.org, the actual address of the paper. When visited, the website features a photo of a demonic-looking puppy (a shih tzu mix named gordon) with the caption "This is fluffy, he is destroyer of worlds." Except for Fluffy, who maintained his cold, apocalyptic gaze, a good laugh was enjoyed by all.
