[edit] Ilfracombe - Railway Info & the Hotel Fire

Hi - thanks for clearing up the 'Walcomb'/'Woolacombe' mix-up. I don't know the area that well, and assumed that Walcombe was just another local place name - you know, somewhere small. I am surprised myself that I didn't spot the error - I have been to Woolacombe for an annual holiday every year since the early 1970's!

Most years we end up shopping in or visiting Ilfracombe at least once, which is how I come to have an interest in the place. Also, on the night of The Fire, we drove down the main road (from Combe Martin direction) passing the end of Fore Street at about 18:45 (no obvious fire engines). 15 mins later I was fueling the car at the garage in the High Street as we saw fire engines first from Woolacombe (the Ilfracombe ones had long since gone past, plus an ambulance), then Barnstaple - but when we saw the 'snorkel' appliance we knew something really big was up. But we were too 'good', and continued back to our Woolacombe camp site for tea - we didn't stop to watch. Just as well really, we'd have been there for hours!

Incidentally, if you have local knowledge, I'd really like to know what's happening at Woolacombe Station. Once Upon a Time closed down at the end of last season and the site has since been sold...

EdJogg 08:40, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ed. Thank you for your message and for your efforts in these articles. I'm quite impressed by the detail you've gone into on the branch article. Have you walked along the old railway line, there is a very informative tourist information board with pictures and the history of the station right on the spot where the station once stood. My name is Adam, I live in Southampton but grew up in North Devon. I actually lived in Saunton for most of my life but moved to Ilfracombe when I hit 16 although I'd always gone to school there. It's a nice area, it has alot of character. Ilfracombe has always been viewed as abit of a run down area, it's crazy to think that what many north devon people think is abit of a blight on the landscape is actually one of its greatest assets to the outside world. Ilfracombe is certainly looking alot better than it did 21 years ago when I first lived there in the once derelict biccolscombe hotel (can just about remember it, I'm 25 going on 26 :-]). I'd loved to see it developed further. Any development which takes place in a location like this will always be planned very carefully. So I think there are some great things in store for Ilfracombe once, some new industries start to develop in the surrounding areas there will be more interest in it as alot of people besides the retirement population will want to live there.

JHJPDJKDKHI! 06:05, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for the kind comments. I had it in mind to create the Ilfracombe Branch Line article, but 'not yet', however the situation with the Ilfracombe formatting rather forced my hand. (BTW - It's easy adding detail when you've already got the reference books to hand!) We have walked the line, once, but only downhill! This was a few years ago, when the farmland between the railway bridge at Mortehoe Stn and a car park on the Lee road was not accessible. Now you can follow the original route.
I like the fact that Ilfracombe is mostly still 'original' (hence a shame about the Montebello). Small shops, 'real' back-street garages, oodles of completely pointless built-in decoration on the buildings... We were also fortunate to experience the cinema last year before it was sold (we saw 'Garfield'). Like stepping back in time. We thought it would be a good candidate for the Restoration programme! It's amazing what a coat of paint and modern-fonted signs will do for a building. We didn't go in this year, but I'm sure the new owners will have lost that 'something special' through saving the building.
Yet in other places, Ilfracombe does seems to be a place of demolition/dereliction: the Victoria Pavilion, the place next to the museum, odd hotels (eg the Hydro), even the old tourist info building that was an art gallery for a while - and the ridiculous Post Office (enquiry counter)!! Thankfully some places have been restored, and this is an ongoing process - especially the Royal Hotel (was that the name?) - the building in the middle of the High Street with fancy iron balustrades, derelict for years, and now 'a picture').
So I guess I do have a kind of affection for Ilfracombe, which is perhaps why it's still in my watch list...

[edit] Result

What was the result of your protest to improv about his actions?

I don't think he has any intention of responding to you. This is why you should never give liberals, especially marxists, power. Thanks for trying.

Hi, I'm not sure who you are but if you look at my profile you wlil see I'm very left wing on both the economic and social scales of the political spectrum. It's almost as though you're assuming that people who agree with you on one thing share your political leanings or worse still, that the right have a monopoly on the odd value that I consider important and that these values are somehow alien to left leaning people. This cries intolerance and bigotry.
This user stands at economic left -6.75, social Libertarian -1.90 on the political compass.
JHJPDJKDKHI! 13:35, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

So it isn't intolerant or bigoted to block me as he did? If you don't like what happened to me then maybe you should reconsider being a leftist. He did it to silence a voice he didn't like or agree with. I will ask him again to delete the pages. Have a good one.

I raised the issue about him because I thought his actions were wrong, he was intolerant of other peoples views and again that's why I raised the issue in the first place. I also didn't suggest it isn't intolerant behaviour, I said the complete opposite. You need to seperate ideology from actions. Just because I'm left of center does not mean I'm authoritarian in the same manner as Improv, or even authoritarian to the slightest degree. Don't kid yourself thinking the right have a monopoly on freedom of speech, they are just as guilty as anyone else of trying to silence it. JHJPDJKDKHI! 11:20, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Len Jeans

Are the veterens of wars and what they say not notable on wikipedia?

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: See WP:BIO for examples of the sort of people we accept biographical articles on (assuming we can find more than "He's a veteran of insert-war-here", of course). Of course, to judge whether or not what they say is notable, we actually need an example of such. Without any information about who the person is, what they have done that merits an individual encyclopaedia article, and any notable comments they have made in addresses or press reports, we cannot make any firm judgement to keep an article about them.

[edit] Bicclescombe Park

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Bicclescombe Park, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Bicclescombe Park. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. [edit] Ilfracombe: Montebello Hotel Fire (again!) + more

Hi again. I noticed you have recently tweaked the section about the fire. Unfortunately, the grammar in that paragraph still doesn't work quite right (tenses are still mixed). I haven't tweaked it further as I thought it really needed the hotel's demolition state updated too. Is there any new news to report?.

Incidentally, I'm afraid I agree with the 'PROD' for Bicclescombe Park (see above), at least as the article currently stands. However, you've wikilinked Fore Street, and I reckon that that COULD make an interesting article - there are plenty of interesting buildings that together make it 'notable', even though I don't think any would stand their own article. Cheers. -- EdJogg 20:39, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ed. Bicclescombe park was a little joke as was the Dog_Fart_Neutralizing_Thong. I was curious to see if the park would be kept, testing the water.
On the other note, I'm sorry as it was abit of a quick job. Do you agree the section should be put in the past tense now? I will have a look around for news articles showing recent developments and will add this later.JHJPDJKDKHI! 11:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Didn't think it was you that started Dog_Fart_Neutralizing_Thong, or do you have an alter-ego here? Also, I'm glad you clarified your comment about Bicclescombe Park, I hadn't spotted it as a 'joke', but can see how it might be a 'test piece' - took 'em a long time to find it though!

Back to the point in hand. One reason I didn't tweak your edit is that it really requires knowledge of whether the hotel has been demolished or not. Otherwise you're verging dangerously towards Douglas Adams-esque verb tenses - ("will have had to have been demolished", maybe?? :o) ) -- EdJogg 13:01, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I used my other account which I use to focus on academic geography articles but I've been extremely quiet of late so my bad sense of humour is shining through. I see what you mean about the hotel, I should, hopefully be visiting ilfracombe over new years so will take a look at it. Otherwise I'll just ask over the phone a random friend who lives there. During January I feel like spending some time on this article to try and get it up to say B-grade standard but that's probably jumping the gunJHJPDJKDKHI! 11:50, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

What a waste of infrastructure. It's a shame I just missed going on the old LSWR to Plymouth via Okehampton and Tavistock. Imagine going over the Meldon Viaduct - a bit like Beulah 'near' Kirkby Stephen. Rosser.
