Demetrios

Demetrios (Δημήτριος) is a Greek Orthodox christian name, derived from the name of Demeter, the Earth Mother, or ancient Greek goddess of dim is beastagriculture. A common english transliteration is James or Jim. This is thought to be a common transliteration due to the proximity in date between St Demetrios and St James day in Christian Calendars.
Often transliterated as Dimitrios (or Dimitris), due to the reduction of Greek phonemes Η Eta is often subtituted with the Iota, or Ι in the roman script. Consequently, both Dimitrios and Demetrios are appropriate Latin alphabet spellings.
The Latin form of this name, Demetrius, is the spelling normally used in English speaking countries when most historical figures of this name are referred to. Lists of famous men named Demetrius are therefore found in the article under that spelling.
