Formerly the Communist Party of Bahrain, the Democratic Bloc had three MPs in the Kingdom's 2002-2006 parliament and at least one member appointed to the upper chamber. However it lost all its seats in 2006's general elections.
The party is led by Hassan Madan, who also works as a columnist on a pro-government newspaper, the party has a broadly left wing agenda.
Its MPs have been amongst the most consistently supportive of political liberalisation and defending social freedoms. This has brought them into constant conflict with Islamist MPs.
One of its three MPs, Abdulhadi Marhoon, served as the Deputy Speaker from 2002-2006.
