the username is from a recurring dream involving masks i had in high school.
[edit] what i do
currently, i'm finishing up a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary computing and the arts at uc san diego. i work as a student web designer/developer for the carbon/clivar hydrographic data office at the nearby scripps institution of oceanography.
[edit] what i love
i may be an art student, but i'm frequently mistaken for a music major: i fell in love with twentieth-century classical music about three years ago and have since bored many an acquaintance with detailed historical breakdowns of composers' careers and their music. i infrequently compose music for strings (mostly cello and violin). my senior thesis project was an attempt to adapt minimalist compositional structures to film editing. i am a percussion junkie and an unapologetic groupie for two of the percussionists in the music department.
my other interests are multifarious:
anime.
experimental film.
witchcraft and other forms of magic (i do not subscribe to them nor do i practice, but they fascinate me as a possible precursor to religion and a psychologically interesting phenomenon).
other genres of music — favorites are jazz, punk (mostly british. most american punk rock was and still is rather unadventurous as far as punk goes), post-punk, indie rock (whatever that means anymore), hip-hop, noise music, IDM, some trance, experimental dub, industrial, drum and bass and its offshoot drill and bass, and a host of other music i couldn't begin to classify. my tastes usually run towards the extreme, the off-putting, and the fairly obscure.
the study of comparative religion.
the study of maledicta (swear words).
physics, especially quantum physics, astronomy and chemistry. i was a chemistry student before switching majors, and my interest here has been near-lifelong.
spaceflight. i'm more of a history buff in this area, especially as nasa hasn't done anything terribly interesting since skylab.
masks, their social implications, and uses in meditation.
typography.
linguistics and languages.
words in general. i still get happily lost in a good dictionary.
[edit] wiki
i've not been a wikipedian for very long yet, and as such my contributions have mostly been minor editing: reworking of clumsy writing, correction of typos, and the like. if you're actually curious, you can see what i've been up to here or here.
